General Information
Feminism, which has gained impetus as an area of public interest in Turkey,
in 1980’s, has become one of the main fields of study in academic circles in
1990’s. Many scholars studying on women issues established networking and
cooperation to mainstream the women’s studies at the universities.
Ankara University has a special status in women’s studies due to its large
number of women academicians, since it has been established. In addition to
the large number of academicians, there has been a great number of MA and
PhD dissertations, researches and seminars on women and gender. The
establishment of the Department of Women’s Studies contributed to the
development of knowledge and experience on women’s studies.
Department of Women’s Studies was established in 1996 as a feminist academic
department and since the beginning, there has been a close collaboration
between the department and Women's Studies Center of Ankara University.
